The recent Dinner by Candlelight events were a great success. The concept behind the Dinners was to give our friends and supporters a little taste of what life is like living without electric lighting, a reality for most people in refugee and IDP camps on the Thai/Burmese border. However, we still wanted people to enjoy themselves while raising awareness and funds for two solar projects.

Dinners were held around the globe, from Scotland to Thailand and from New Zealand to the USA. People dined on Thai, Burmese, Spanish and Indian food while learning about our solar projects.
Thanks to the ten Dinners and one Loy Krathong run (the Thai festival of light) we raised over $1,500 US to help pay for lighting for 120 displaced people in an IDP camp in Shan state and 115 Burmese schoolchildren living in Thailand.

For people in these remote communities, living without electric lighting means relying on kerosene lamps and/or candles, forms of lighting that are not only expensive, dirty and dangerous but also a health risk for many. As many of the residents’ homes are made from thatch and given the dry climate, solar lighting also greatly reduces fire risks which can devastate a community.
With our projects we’ll be providing solar panels, lamps and training on how to maintain the solar systems, giving people a chance to study and work after dark without damaging their eyesight, running the risk of fires or damaging their health.
